Hello everyone, I am excited to tell you about my new initiative to establish an institute for fundamental physics. I am thinking of calling it “Deep physics” (this was suggested to me by Chiara Marletto). I would also love to hear your suggestions and thoughts regarding the name of the institute, as well as the topics you find worth investigating. We are planning to focus on a number of issues some of which I have already blogged about at length, ranging from “What is quantum reality?” and “What lies beyond quantum physics?” to “Where do macroscopic quantum effects exist?” and “How quantum are living systems?”. There will be a special focus on the constructor theory, about which I wrote a bit in my last blog and have promised to tell you a lot more in the future (so please keep your eyes peeled). I am lucky to have a fantastic team of people helping me out with this and the whole process of navigating the complexities of raising funding is probably worth its own separate coverage. Come to think of it, I might devote some of my future prose to the sociology of science – as I see it and if there is enough interest for the readers.Suffice it to say that the timing for establishing such an institute seems to me to be opportune. The UK Government has just announced an initiative – called ARIA – which is an (Advanced Research and Innovation) agency whose task will be to boost funding for adventurous research. So good news for research funding all round. But enough about fundraising and institutes and peripheral activities aimed at supporting science. You physics aficionados would probably be disappointed if I didn’t tell you at least a bit of something new about the Queen of All Sciences. And, boy, do I have a great topic in mind…
Has any one performed this experiment yet? If not, why not?
